A women’s rights activist has accused Russia of excusing violence against women after a bill was passed to reduce the severity of domestic violence laws.
The bill in question states that the abuser will be fined $500 or 15 days of jail time if it’s a once only offence that year and doesn’t cause grievous bodily harm. The law applies to all culprits of domestic violence.
The women’s rights activist, Claudia Wilson, said that allowing violence against women was disgusting.
“I feel sad for the women of Russia,” she said at a press conference on Friday at the TAFE campus.
“It’s a very bad example of woman’s rights.”
